Jules McKinnon: The Long Way Round

Jules McKinnon voiceover artist

Some people find their voice early and never let it go. Jules McKinnon found hers early, put it to work in ways she probably didn’t expect, and has spent the last twenty years proving just how many things a voice can do.

She started out as a radio presenter, on-mic, live, doing what radio presenters do. Then life took her somewhere else entirely. She became a traveller, an adventure guide, a surfer, a snowboarder, a yoga teacher, a sound therapist. She spent time in India and Sri Lanka, drawn to the musicians, storytellers and space holders she encountered there, and came away with a deep understanding of what a voice can carry beyond the words it’s saying. Back home, she brought those influences together with her Celtic roots, playing Indian harmonium, singing traditional Scottish songs, guiding people through yoga and meditation with a voice built for exactly that.

This wasn’t a detour. It was all the same thread.

Jules has just joined our voice roster, and the radio background matters here. She’s not new to a microphone, and it shows. What she brings alongside that is two decades of experience, and a genuine warmth.

She got in touch to find out what stepping back into commercial voiceover work actually involves. If you’re thinking about the same thing, our guides to what makes a voiceover showreel work and finding the right voice are a good place to start.
